a feminist legacy

Founded in 1980, "MAENAD" was a feminist periodical featuring essays, visual art, and creative writing. It shut down in 1983 due to a lack of funding. To continue the work of amplifying women's voices, Maenad Literary Journal will re-establish a space for female-centered stories.

why maenads?

Maenads were female worshippers of Dionysus. Living within the patriarchal framework of Ancient Greece, women had little opportunity to leave the domestic sphere. By claiming they were possessed by Dionysus, they could run to the forest to dance, ecstatic and furious. Following in their tradition, Maenad Literary is a place for unfiltered female expression.
